At least 64 Killed in Rio de Janeiro's Biggest Law Enforcement Operation on Organized Crime
A minimum of 64 people died in a security raid targeting the Red Command gang in Rio de Janeiro's northern suburbs - the biggest and most lethal operation in the region's history.
Four police officers were included in the fatalities during the police action in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, state officials said. In excess of 80 suspects were taken into custody.
Violent conflicts commenced when approximately 2,500 police forces moved in on Tuesday morning. The Red Command responded with gunfire, setting fire to barriers and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, police representatives stated.
The International human rights organization stated it felt "horrified" by the security action, calling for "swift and comprehensive examinations".
Raid Aftermath
The informal settlements adjacent to the city's international airport is regarded as the main base of among the nation's strongest organised crime groups.
Local authorities confirmed a minimum of 50 of the fatalities were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".
Dozens of people were wounded, including civilians caught in the crossfire.
Local Reaction
Community members have compared the elevated neighborhood - inhabited by approximately 300,000 people - to a "battlefield" since the operation began.
Transport routes stay blocked in the entire neighborhood.
Gang Growth
The criminal network has been increasing their territory across the Rio state, growing illegal substance trade paths and dominance over the slum communities.
Security forces said over 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were confiscated in the operation, together with dozens of firearms.
Raid Preparation
The combined action by civil and military police was preceded by a year-long investigation.
Many of the individuals are considered participants in an organization from the Pará state who are presently concealed in the metropolitan area.
